15.4 seconds @ 225 degrees

No fog this morning, good swell direction; the Sunday crowd was all over it.  The bump on the water yesterday was gone leaving very smooth, glassy conditions with shoulder to head high surf.  The sets were larger.  It is a south swell so there were long periods of doldrums interspersed with jockeying for position and priority when the sets showed up.  As usual, the big guys had the outside locked up while the groms were jazzing the glass on the inside.  Little gumby people.  Have a look:
Luke snags a tasty one...

And Kenny was actually out in the sun...

John slides into a nice left...

Staring it down...

Chest high to you and me...

Clay cranks that 10 footer around...

Slotted...

Luke again; on a frothy one...

Smiles can only mean one thing...

Now for the grom show...

A grom tucking himself into a 3 footer

And gets a cover up

The inside section

More smiles...

There's supposed to be more on tap for tomorrow...

Still some swell

But there's a bit of wind to go with it. Chest to shoulder high, fair surface conditions with fair shape. Waves are still clean at this point but the wind could be a factor shortly. Pesky wind!! The tide is causing it to back off some and the biggest set waves are kinda sloppy. More south in it this morning. About 50 people out. The lot is packed and so is street parking.

New NW Swell Rumbles into San Diego

Yep, we had some real waves this morning
Except for the crowd (50+) the conditions were good as the new NW swell wrapped into the SoCal coastline.  At 15th St in Del Mar it was overcast, glassy and shoulder to head high on the sets.  The tide was coming up and the swell had a tough time with it as the morning progressed.  But, it was the best surf in a while and the crew made the most of it.  Groms ruled the inside, old guys the outside peak on the reef.  The water is still in the upper 60's which makes all of it way more fun.

If you haven't been to Del Mar since John King sold the parking lot you will have a little adjustment to make in your routine.  The new owners no longer give the dawn patrol a free pass; everyone pays something now.  The competition for free street parking is almost as intense as a crowded line up so get there early or at the shift change as the morning crew leaves for work.
Stay glassy San Diego

Here are some photos of some of the better rides or more notable gear selection: (I just noticed that all of the photos are of lefts; weird huh.)

A nice line

Big enough to be a SUP except it's not...
And he always manages to slide into one way before anyone else....

As I said, the groms ruled the inside...

This guy was ON FIRE...

Yes, it was a bit crowded

Nice bottom turn

Finished off with some spray...

Headed towards a sand barrel...

This is it?

Glassy, calm and very inconsistent. Chest to maybe shoulder high slow rollers fighting the high tide all the way. Fair shape, ridiculous crowd; 50+. Sets are closing out. There are some nice waves out here this morning you just have to be patient and be prepared to weave your way through all of the groms on the inside. That, or just run 'em over.
Oh yeah, the street parking is tough to find already.

More on the swell

Here in DM the swell is showing headhigh plus on the sets. Lots of west in this swell so Del Mar is not going to be all that shapely. Right now it's mostly big, long closed out walls. The left to the south of the reef (you know, my secret spot) has the best shape but not consistently. I think that the swell direction is wrong for Del Mar so I would check those that can handle the size and the westerly direction.

Still some waves

Not as smooth as the last two days (a bit of lump on the water) and also smaller; waist high or so. Looks to be about 20 or so out with more folks on the way. Fair conditions, fair shape, moderate crowd.

A photo of our not so surfer friendly parking lot. What a loss.

Long lulls

But the olas are here! Waist to chest high with glassy conditions and 20 or so on it. The waves are a little lined up but there are some choice peaks pushing through; favoring the lefts. Looks like a go out to me!

Monday Monday

Small scale shorebreak on tap this morning. Glassy conditions, southerly swell direction but no juice. And the water is cooling down. 3 people out. Looks like there is a nice waist high left peak just south of the reef every 10 minutes or so; that's where 2 of the 3 guys out are. Calm, peaceful morning here in Del Mar. Some things never change. Except free morning session parking in the lot.

All Things Must Pass

Including our hassle free dawn patrol parking at 15th street in Del Mar.  But that may all be a happy memory by as soon as tomorrow morning.  The lot has been sold to an investment/holding company and they will not have the same loosey goosey approach of John King.  They now have "real" employees who wear blue polo shirts with name tags.  These folks will be in the kiosk and at the gate starting at 8 a.m. every morning of every day of every week of every month.  It gets better.  After a short while the lot will become a "pay at the gate and display" your pass on the dashboard of your car.  No pass?  Then you can expect one of Del Mar's finest to issue you a $40 parking ticket.

We (Chuck, Luke, Terry and I) talked with one of the blue meanies this morning as they were setting up at the entry gate and the kiosk getting ready for their first day as the new crew.  They assured us that if you were in the lot by 8 a.m. you would not be charged on your way out.  That assurance was qualified with more than a few "...I think..." and "...I haven't really been told..." and "...I'm not sure but,...".  In other words, he wanted to do his best to not startle us and provoke an unwelcome response.

So, I don't know how this will play out either but I think it is a safe bet to speculate that our parking situation is about to change.

I call dibbs on the first unmetered street parking spot on the east side of the street just north of the lot.

Showing Signs of Life?

A bit of a swell in the water this morning though it's struggling to break. Some waist high (maybe bigger) stuff huffing and puffing its way to shore through glassy surface conditions. I haven't seen anything break yet though except very close to shore. It might stand up a bit more with less tide. Chuck, Luke and Reid (along with 10-15 others) are out there somewhere trying to make it work; wait, they both just picked off a little left shoulder. So, swell has picked up, it's glassy and not too crowded but there are long waits.

Strong coastal eddy

This morning. Swirling winds, poor surface conditions, knee high shore break and 8 people out; all on softies. Not a surf day. But there are other things to do right?

Looking for some surf?

Then don't bother looking at 15th street. Lumpy surface conditions with a south breeze providing the ripple. It's small, very small. About knee high. Providing some thrilling shorebreak surfing opportunities. One lone guy on a softie sitting about 25 yards out. But like Chuck is fond of saying "...it could be worse...". I don't know how. But he always says that. Trying to cheer me up I suppose. Anyway, it's not a bad day for a Monday so...

Code Red

Your morning cuppa Teahupoo. Thanks to Dave for turning me on to this video.  A must see. Try to watch it with out moving your lips.

Now, on to Friday's surf report. Glassy conditions. Ankle high shore break. And unbelievably, 15 people out. The very definition of "flat" this morning. But it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. Me, I'm off to see the dentist.

Misty Morning

Can't see no sun. I know you're out there somewhere, havin' fun.
-B. Marley

Heavy sea mist hanging in the air. Glassy conditions, cloud cover and zero waves. 3-4 people out. Knee high shore break is about it folks. Guess we had all of our fun last week, eh?
