The swell is as large as its going to get

More consistency and size this morning. Chest to shoulder on the sets. Conditions are good but a slight surface crinkle has developed overnight. Fair shape, large crowd (35+) all lumped together on the reef. The best is on the inside and just south of the reef. Water is a tad cool by SoCal standards (63-64) so a full suit is what's happening.

More size...

But very inconsistent. Glassy conditions with a slight NNE breeze. Waist to maybe chest on the sets. Sets are lined up and closing out. Hard to catch and you have to be right on the peak to get into them. 15 people out. That's Luke on the video.

The lump is gone

Sea surface has cleaned up and smoothed out leaving us with a flat surface and some waist high SSW lines showing. These are the precursors of the swell that should start building late today. Right now though the line up is about 50 yards from shore and weakly crumbling over in the shallow water. Occasional larger set waves. 12 people out.

Despite the rain

Conditions aren't all that bad. A slight ripple with some NW breeze and a minus tide. There are some bumps out there that are trying to be waves but even with the negative tide not much is happening. Mostly knee to waist high shore break with some slightly larger inconsistent sets. Overall; weak, crumbly and hard to catch. But that hasn't stopped the crowd of 30+ from trying.

Freakishly low

Tide this morning. Light swirling winds and a mix of swells bumping into each other. Lumpy surface conditions with mostly small drained out surf. Except for the inconsistent set waves. Those are head high and exploding onto the reef with a lot of energy. A kind of energy that only close outs can produce. 6 people out paddling this way and that, searching for that spot where the swells collide to produce a surfable peak. As in life itself.

Surf's Up

And so is that pesky eddy wind. NW wind has but a slight bump on the water and waves. Mostly waist high, breaking close to shore. The inconsistent sets are shoulder to head with the very best of them offering an open face and shoulder here and there. More tide will help but by that time the wind will really be up. So, there is some surf but it's mediocre. 17 people out.

The Thrill is Gone

And so are the waves. Essentially flat with a few rare waist high sets that are long, lined up and closing out. More tide may help. But right now it is a mere memory of how good it was yesterday. Glassy conditions 10 people out.

Great conditions!

And even though it could use a tad more tide, the surf is clean with some open faces to work with. The sets are lined up right now so the in between stuff is what to go for. Head high on the sets, waist to chest for everything else. Light crowd; 6 people out. If you've got the time this morning it's well worth it. So turn that car around and

Must be Friday...

Cause we've got the Friday crowd. 30+ people in the line up all desperately scratching for some space and a face on some slow but steady mush burgers. There is some south in the water but at a fairly steep angle so the WNW wind swell is pretty much it. Good conditions, waist to chest high; backing off and doubling up. Way too crowded for the number and type of waves on tap this morning. Best bet is the inside section or the reform on some of the set waves.

Short period

Westerly wind-swell predominates this morning. 1-2 second intervals. And along with that wind-swell we have NNW wind. Knee to waist high, poor to fair shape with fair, moving rapidly to poor, conditions. 14 people out. Widely scattered across the reef. Very slow, very weak.

And they're off!

As locals brace for a day of traffic gridlock (today is opening day at Del Mar. Is your bonnet good to go?) there is no such problem in the line up this morning. 4 people out in some very small (ankle to knee) wind swell lines. Playing out its final moments as a shore dump. Very clean conditions with a slight westerly breeze beginning to pick up. Like yesterday, there is a rare south set rolling through but it never amounts to much.

What a difference a day makes...

On shore eddy winds have put some chunk on the water this morning. Thigh to waist high crumblers trying desperately to be surfable waves. Looks like mostly windswell with a very rare set wave from the south. Poor shape, poor conditions. If you're looking for some junky surf, today is the day. On the other hand if you've got things to do this morning you won't be missing anything here.

Good conditions

Glassy, waist to chest with fair shape. A tad more consistent than yesterday and way less crowded; 6 people out. Doubling up some and the tide is dropping. The sun has just poked over the hill warming things up nicely

Despite the crowd...

It's still small. But it's Friday. It's glassy. And the water is close to 70. But I thought the whole point of surfing was to ride some waves. Not too much of that going on this morning.

Basically it's flat with some very inconsistent waist high, one wave sets. 20 guys out. It's only 30" off low tide so it's kinda drained and dumpy. A summer morning in San Diego.

The wet streets of Del Mars

Early morning showers have dampened Del Mar's thorough fares. And the south wind that usually accompanies those weather events is still here. That has put a wrinkle on the water and some crumble on the waves. Knee to waist high with long long waits.

Right now the reef is the only place with any waves at all with the rest of the spots showing some small, dribbling shore break. You may be wondering what happened to that south swell. Well, at 203 degrees its just sailing right on by.

But hey, it's low tide so who knows what the rising tide will bring.

Wind swell Wednesday

Small (knee to thigh), weak, scattered wind swell peaks up and down the beach. No wind, glassy conditions. Not much to ride out there this morning even if the occasional set wave manages to make it look enticing. Even the sweepers are not having much
luck. 7 people out in the line up.

Nevermore...

Small scale (knee to thigh high) sloppy surf this morning. NW breeze has put a bump and grind on the water and conditions are flirting with being poor overall. 4 people out. In a few words; not much shape, not much size. A fairly typical summer day here at 15th street.
