Love that dirty water...

Even smaller than yesterday and we got some more runoff last night so the poo index is still a factor. Luckily the surf is small, weak and almost nonexistent. So there is little conflict between the dirty water or waves decision. Smooth, glassy conditions with a hint of offshore breeze. Water temp down in the low 60's so it's probably time to put away that spring suit until well...next spring. What's next, booties??!!

Dramatic sky

Good conditions, offshore wind, but once again not much surf. Just now coming off a 4.7 tide which is swamping things a bit. Mostly knee to waist high shore break with some occasional larger set waves. No one out. Which is how it should be considering the rain from yesterday and early this morning. Right? Right?

Oily Glass!

The only thing missing are waves. Weak calf to knee high shore break. 8 or so people standing around ( yes, standing) in the line up waiting for one they can push into. A below average (way below) surf day here in Del Mar.

What's with the crowd?

20 people elbowing each other on the reef. Glassy, long lulls with some waist high sets breaking pretty close in. Fair shape and cooler water temps. Less tide will help some. Pretty mellow morning.

Finally a Friday

But still no surf. Good conditions with weak knee high (on the sets) shore break. There's a fall like chill in the air but that will vanish as soon as the sun clears the hill. In all aspects except for the surf, this should be a great day.

That had to hurt!!

Move along, nothing to see here

Dead flat. And that's that.

The thrill is gone

No waves today. Decent conditions, glassy sea surface. Knee to waist high shore break; poor shape. 10 people out (I don't know why, you ask them). Clear skies here in Del Mar but La Jolla is blanketed with fog that looks like it extends a mile or so off shore. And it looks like there is a kelp cutter ship right off 8th street.

So, are these waves worth it?

Wednesday gave us some significant rainfall and runoff. The first flush if you will. And now it's Friday. So has enough time passed? Cause conditions are perfect and the waves are pretty good. Especially the ones pushing in from the south. Somewhat lully with waist to chest with occasional larger sets. 9 guys out. What to do; what to do.

Surf Alert!

Today is not a surf day. 10-12 knot SW wind has put a serious crimp in surf quality. Not quite VAS conditions but it's working up to that.

Nice sunrise

The surf is missing in action though. Knee high dribble breaking close to shore. Light NE breeze has put some wrinkle on the water. There must be some stuff swinging in from the south once in a while because the crew (9 of them) are sitting pretty far outside. A wavejet would be the board of choice this morning. Making a wake for everyone else to surf on.

Friday Surf

Good conditions, inconsistent waist to chest surf; larger on the sets. Fair shape but the larger sets are closed out. Plenty of room to move about with only about 16 people out. Mostly concentrated right on the reef. Tide's coming up so that will take the edge off a little. 20th street, however, is pitching some rather sick barrels.

Big wind; moderate swell

Wind is out of the south this morning which is messin' with the surf quality. Waves are still in the waist to chest to shoulder range with poor to fair shape. The sets are closed out but the in-between stuff can offer up a decent ride now and again. Not Del Mar at its finest (wind and swell direction have seen to that) but not it's worst either. So, to all you furloughed federal government workers, you've got nothing else to do for a while so get on out and catch a few waves. It will make you feel better.

Some size!

Waist to chest high and head high on the sets. A NE wind pattern. Fair surface conditions with a slight amount of bump. This is mostly a NW swell with just a tad more west than Del Mar likes. So the shape isn't all that good and the sets are simply closing out cleaning up the line up in the process. There are some peaks and shoulders here and there but you have to hunt them down. About 20 guys out.

It's lobsta season. Boats are out setting their traps and reef free divers are coming up with some keepers. Did you know that the California Spiny Lobster does not have claws? It's true; google it if you don't believe me.
