Slow start...

Waist to chest with no rhyme or reason. Clean surface conditions, inconsistent lined up set waves with some in between corners here and there. Sort of like "Momma O" is going through the motions but she really isn't into it. At least on the 15th street reef. Up north at 20th street she's throwing off some top to bottom peaks. Medium tide right now; won't be at its peak till around 10.

Smaller

With a slight chunk on the water. Still clean, just not as clean as yesterday. Waist to chest, slow, mushy with some reform on the inside. Fair to poor shape; best on the reef. Rising tide. 7 guys out with more (surf PE) on the way. It's chilly but the sun should take care of that. All on all, not the best day ever but not the worst either.

Not crowded!

Very clean conditions, light puffs of breath from the east, waist to chest surf struggling with the rising tide. The sets are somewhat larger and that what you have to wait for. Even those are fairly soft. Mushy. Yes, that's the word I'm looking for, mushy. 4 guys out and the sun is rapidly heating things up. Going to be an awesome day. So get out there and rock it!

Much better...

Than yesterday. Very clean, focused swell, fair to good shape. Waist to chest high. 8 guys out. Now all we need is for the tide to back off a tad, the sun to come up, the parking lot to fill up and we have the makings of a classic Beach Boys or Jan and Dean SoCal surf tune. Let me know what you come up with. The winners will be posted here.

If only...

It was 70, not 39. Another sunny, frosty morning here in San Diego. Some waist to chest to head high short to medium period west swell. Sets are closing out, most everything else is having a losing battle with the high tide and not breaking till well inside. 12 people out. Conditions are excellent; no wind, slight surface ripple. Now if only the surf was too.

Not as windy

But still some sizable waves pushing in. Short period left overs mixed in with some medium period west swell producing shoulder to head to plus (on the larger sets) size surf. Clean conditions with light off shores. Shape ranges from poor to fair. Right place right time kinda day. You're gonna work for every ride you get and especially those you don't. 2 guys out; Brent and Steve.

Impressive!

Winds 20-25 mph with gusts to 35! Huge storm surf and some radical hacked up, blown out and chunked up conditions. Needless to say, not a surf day.

Funky south wind

Is here but it has a touch of east in it so its not totally thrashed out there. Chunky and bumpy conditions with the occasional chest high set barely making it through. 7 people out battling the rapidly deteriorating conditions. So if you were going to try to get in the water this morning you missed the window if you're not already out there. I can see the rain pushing in from the north.

Flat spells followed by

Some "...I think I can, I think I can..." sets. Knee to waist high, good surface conditions, fair to middelen shape and a rising tide. Word from the village elders is that it will get better as the tide fills in. And when the sun comes out. And if the wind stays down.
Actually it looks better right now than it did yesterday and it's warmer too. So, while it's not an epic day (or even close) there are a few waves to be had. So there.

Dribbles and drabs

Knee to waist this morning. Set waves maybe chest high. A decaying swell so it's fairly weak overall. There is a hint of some windswell. Looks like some pick and choose corners just south of the reef and some tiny shore break peaks in front of the ramp. 10 people out, basking in the sun like seals on a buoy. Looks like its going to be a super day weather wise. So get out there if you can.

Smaller

But some westerly swell is still out there. Dropped way off to mostly waist high with some occasional larger sets. The bigger sets are still closing out but overall the shape is much better today. Rising tide. Some reform on the inside. Clean surface conditions, sunny skies and upper 30's air temp. About 15 people out, mostly the surf PE crew.

Clear and f...ing COLD!

Very clean conditions, no wind, waist to chest with some larger sets (head high and plus on some). Long lulls. Sets are walled up and closing out. Best bet is the in between stuff. You'll get some rides but you will definitely get a cold water flush from getting tagged by a set wave or two. So it's pick and chose, pick and choose. While conditions are good the shape is only poor to fair but that's what you get with a long period west swell at 15th street. That and hypothermia. Just from changing into your wetsuit. Anyway...

Slow ride

Clean conditions, off shore breeze, frigid air temp (39) but better than it's been. Waist to chest on the sets with some fairly long lulls. The set waves are standing up on the reef but the rising tide is forcing them to roll a bit before breaking. Positioning is critical this morning. Not too far out and not too far in. Lefts are looking better than the rights. Luke and Clay are going for it. Other than that it's a light crowd with a fair amount of sittin' around.

Yep, it's WINDY!

Blown out, chunked up and stormy. Classic VAS conditions. No ridable waves, no one out. Not even the surf PE groms. Rain and blustery conditions most of the weekend. So you're going to have to find something else to do.

Forerunners are showing

Large west swell has begun flexing it's power and might this morning. Calm, clean conditions with consistent pulses of big fat overhead waves. The high tide has swamped it considerably and even the outside sets are rolling right under the line up. Which right now is 5 guys. Some steep, fast inside sections but you have to sit pretty far inside to scratch into them. Best shape is on the reef. Sets are cruising in about every 5" with about 3-4 waves; all "plus size". It will be really crazy with the lower tide.

Clean conditions

High tide has swamped it but we have mostly glassy water this morning. Waist to chest high stuff struggles to push through the tide; showing on the outside but rolling on and not really standing up till it's shore break. Slightly more consistent north and south of the reef. Soft overall. 3 guys out but that will change once surf PE groms get dropped off by their moms. Looks like the cloud cover is beginning to break up with patches of blue sky here and there.

Ugly, ugly, ugly

And cold. And windy. Waist to chest high, no real form or focus. More walled up, lined up and closed out west swell. 14 guys out. Not really a surf day here. Oh well. There's always tomorrow.

It's a Monday, Monday

Topped off with a generous helping of fog. Can't see much except the shore break which is not the best gauge of what's going on in the line up but it doesn't look good. Frank is out there on his wave jet doing no paddle returns to the line up. The fog has pushed back some and I can see chest to maybe head high west walls; lined up and closing out. Luke just phoned in from Terra Mar and the tide is still a tad high but that looks like the spot this morning. So...you might want to check that out; it was fun there yesterday.

Some signs of life

Not a lot going on this morning, mostly knee to thigh high crumblers with rare (very rare) sets that are slightly larger. Poor to fair shape. Incoming tide and a surface texture is starting to build. Soft and mushy overall. 5 guys out. I think tomorrow will be better so save your energy for that.
