Well,

Except for an ugly SW wind, a minus tide (and still dropping), and a swell that is a no show, things couldn't be better here at 15th street. There are some waves of course (chest to shoulder) but they are long, lined up crumbly close outs without much going for them. 8 people out desperately scratching for something, anything, that will get them back to the beach.

More swell...

Less water. Just now coming off a -1.0 tide so it's kinda drained the shape right out of the waves. Predominately short period windswell with some building medium period south. Waist to chest; poor to fair shape. A bit of chunk on the water and an increasing SW breeze. Ok conditions. Needs more water and more of that south swell to fill in.

It comes and it goes...

Today it looks like it's gone. Good conditions, rising tide and left over south swell. Very, very inconsistent; like a lake in between sets. Looks to be in the waist high zone this morning with impossibly long waits. 12 people out. But it's Friday, it's sunny and the water has warmed up some. What more could you want?

Mr. Clean

And glassy. Swell has slowed down a tad but there are still some chest to shoulder high sets. Inconsistent but absolutely perfect conditions. Good to fair shape; best on the reef, only 10 guys out. See you in the water.

More size...

South swell has filled in overnight and is throwing off some waist to chest high surf. Inconsistency is the rule (as with most south swells) but it looks really fun. Light SW breeze is waking up but again, not enough to mess with conditions; yet. About 12 people out. Kenny and Frank both said its really good out there. Me, I could stand just a bit of sunlight. So there you have it.

Patience Grasshopper

Long period south swell is here this morning. And that means looooong waits between waves. I'd say about 15" from set to set. Totally flat in between. Waist to chest on the sets with fair shape. Not too crowded either; 4 guys out, a few more checking it out. High tide is going to slow it down a bit and we still have that pesky eddy flow from the SW but not enough to mess with conditions.

Lumpy, overcast and

Flat. Southerly eddy flow has already put a wrinkle in the water. 1-2 foot shore break and nary a set wave in sight. What about the south swell you say? Too steep an angle; passing us and leaving us disappointed and surf less. Unless you've got a Wave Jet like Frank. Then you can catch just about anything! Better tomorrow?

Smaller

And gutless. Calf to knee high shirt period wind swell. Not much in the way of shape or consistency. Not even breaking till the shore break. It looks tantalizing but it's a mirage. Things might improve a little with less tide but the real problem is the lack of swell.

So...?

Where's the waves? We have some really nice off shore breezes that have really cleaned up surface conditions and are grooming...nothing. Some knee to waist high wind swell peaks are mushing through and flopping over on the inside. Looks really nice, just no rideable waves. Oh we'll, at least it's going to be sunny and warm today.

Lines and Tigers and Bears

Oh my. Waist to chest to head high with lines stacked up on the outside. Off shore conditions with poor shape. Mostly short period wind swell that even the cold, cold off shores can't clean up. Lots of activity but not much surf action. One lonely guy out who is getting pushed further and further outside by the wind. I wonder; should I call the Coast Guard?

Wind, wind and more wind

10-15 mph SW winds with whitecaps and everything that goes with it. Head high junky storm surf and no one out. At least we will see the sun today. That and a Padres win over the Dodgers last night is about as much as one could ask for.

Surprise!

Drizzle, overcast skies, and a light south east breeze but surface conditions are better than anything over the last 4-5 days. The surf, however, not so much. Waist to chest short period westerly wind swell is still the rule. Crumbly with poor shape and 2 people out. It looks like the cloud cover is starting to break up (at least to the south) so maybe we might get to experience some sun today. That would be good.

Heard of "Junk Science"?

Well, today we have junk surf. No wind but the sea surface is pretty confused; lumps, chop and warble everywhere. As for the waves we have mostly waist to chest crumble with some larger lined up, closed out sets. Overall, poor conditions and poor shape. 9 people out trying to chase down a corner but not having much luck. It was better yesterday even with the south wind that was on it pretty much out of the gate.

Short or long...

Short period west wind swell is hanging around producing some rather mediocre surf. Knee to waist on the inside with some waist to chest lined up, crumbly set waves. Still some leftover chunk on the water. Long, wide rip in front of the ramp reaching out past the north lineup and then spreading south to the reef. 10 people out.

Not quite as messy

But that's not saying a lot. Jumbled up waist to chest high wind swell dominating the line up. Stacking up outside and rolling through to a confused, crumbly situation on the inside. A very light easterly breeze putting a bit of texture on the water. Oh, and the water temp has plunged back down to winter temps so don't put those booties away just yet. 10 guys out.

There's a thick mist...

In the air this morning. All of this relentless wave activity has not only whipped the ocean into a froth, it's produced a rather viscous atmosphere. Getting wet just standing on the bluff!

The swell and ocean is still out of control. Westerly mid period, head high plus waves smacking into a ridiculous wind swell. Very poor conditions and same for the shape. However, the wind has clocked around from the east so there may be some possibilities for this to settle out and give us some decent conditions later on the week. Until then,

Holy Guacamole!

It's WINDY! 8-10 knot SW "breeze" pushing through this morning. Shoulder to head to some overhead stuff. Totally blown out. Sloppy shape, sloppy conditions, sloppy weather. My prediction is that this won't turn around until Wednesday.

Bright and Shiny

The swell has picked up. Right now it's a messy combo of SW ground swell and medium period westerly wind swell. Waist to shoulder with some larger set waves. Shape is sketchy with the inside track offering the best chance; the sets are lined up and closed out. Fair surface conditions with some lump and bump on it that seems to be cleaning up some. About 20 people out mostly on the inside peaks just south of the reef.

Glassy conditions

And. No. Waves. Well, actually there are a few slow moving peaks here and there but they really don't amount to much. Breaking in about 3 feet of water so you can do no paddle take offs. Just stand there next to your board and push into one of those ankle slappers. You know, like you used to do when you were first learning to surf. Once this cloud deck clears, it's going to be another beautiful San Diego day.

So rest up. Be ready for tomorrow's south swell.

It's cleaned up some...

But it's still short period westerly wind swell at 15th street. Thigh to waist high, stiff offshore breeze and some crinkle on the water. Not much happening on the reef. The most promising lineups are just to the south and north of it. I think the southerly lineup looks better than the northerly one. Tide is on the way out; shape is fair minus. 10 people out.

Looks like...

It was windy all night. No wind now but surface conditions are lumpy and bumpy at present. Small scale (thigh to waist), crumbly, short period wind swell. 4 people out. Tide is on it's way out to minus status around 10am. So, it's only going to get more drained till then. If you can find someplace that is wind protected or has some kelp to break up the chop, I'd head there. 'Cause it's not happening at 15th street this morning.

More wave Monday

Poor conditions to go with them. Moderate NW wind already chunking things up. Thigh to waist high westerly wind swell hitting at the same time as a minus tide. Not the best combination. Poor shape, 4 guys out. No fooling!
