June gloom. SW wind. Summer crowds. Funky swell. Sounds like fun! Waist to chest high surf this morning. Pretty sloppy overall. Some occasional south peak pop ups; just enough to keep it interesting. Some light texture on the water. An average to slightly below average surf day. Tide is high (4.0) now. Will drain out to a 1.4 low at 12:30pm. About 40 people out; more streaming in.

Glassy with a freshening NW breeze. Soft waist to chest high surf. Out going tide. Long lulls; easy paddle out. A bit more people in the water and the sting rays are lurking in the shallows. A 1.2 low tide at 11:30am then back up to a 6.1 high at 6:15pm. 20 people out.

Overcast. Glassy. And small. Knee to waist high breaking close in with fair shape. Slightly larger with more consistent peaks both north and south of the reef. Tide is just right and flowing out to a 1.0 low at 10:30am. Did I mention that Clay is here? Yep, that's right. About 15 people out; including Clay.

Super glassy, calm winds punctuated with stomach to chest high sets. South swell is still dominate. Shape is kinda warbly and some of the larger sets are closing out. But the crowd is super light; only 10 people out. Good tide right now: on its way out to a 0.6 low at 9:30am. Next high will be a 5.2 at 4:30pm.

Large scale southern hemi energy this morning. Shoulder high in between with head to head and a half on the sets. Need to chose your lineup carefully; the sets are lined up and closed out. But if you're smart you can drop into some pretty exciting stuff. Long lulls; staring out to sea. Trying to pick up that bump on the horizon; which is difficult since the horizon and the sky are the same shade of grey. Glassy sea surface; light NE breeze. A crowd of 50 plus and growing.

SW wind; minus tide. Conditions have seriously deteriorated since yesterday's go out. Chunky sea surface conditions with a crumble on the wave tops. But the south swell is still picking up steam; surf is waist to shoulder and larger on the sets. Inconsistent with some very long lulls. Shape is not bad for the tide; sets are a tad walled up though. Best line up is just south of the main reef. Tide has turned around and is now on the rise with max flood around 9:30am. A 4.2 high tide at 1pm then drops out to a 2.3 low for the evening session. A well spread out crowd of about 50.

More south! Inconsistent but that's the way it is with those south swells. Waist to chest to shoulder with fair shape that will get better as the tide fills in. Glassy sea surface conditions and about 25 people out. High tide is at noon (4.1) then the next low is at 5pm (2.2)

Finally, it's cleaned up! Waist to chest high; maybe shoulder on the sets. It's still mostly short period wind swell but there's a very smooth sea surface. It's kinda walled up but a little more tide should help out the shape. 8:30am will be the max tide push so that might be the call. There is a swirling SW breeze right now; so is it a race between the tide and the wind? Partly cloudy skies with some clearing at the coast. High tide will show up at 11:30am (4.1). About 15 people out.

Weather wise; just about perfect. Surf wise; not so much. Knee to thigh high dribble; weak with poor shape. Short period wind swell from all directions bumping into each other making for very chunky sea surface conditions. Not much out there this morning. Low tide with a nice wide beach for that early morning walk you've been thinking you should do more of. A 4.1 high tide at 11am then a 2.0 low around 4pm. 3 people out.

Head to overhead+ this morning. And that's the reef; 11th street is bigger still. Big fat closed out walls for the most part. Some lulls with not much to ride in between. Wave faces are smooth but the sea surface is really bumpy; the result of NW windswell colliding with the swell from the south. A crowd of 50+ are not playing nice; more that a few collisions and snakes abound. But, it's a beautiful sunny morning in San Diego, the water is in the high 60's and the sting rays haven't shown up yet. 3.8 foot high tide at 9am and then a 1.8 foot low at 2pm. Life is good and the surf will get better; I promise.

Lumpy and confused with flashes of brilliance. 5-6 feet with some 8 foot sets. The mid set waves offer the best chance of good rides. Some NE wind is helping with the shape but the sets are just too much for DM. Very peaky line ups with lots of warble and double ups. And it's a real arm burner paddling out this morning; southerly route looks best but your still going to get tagged. Bumpy sea surface conditions but the wave faces are silky smooth. Tide is rising to 3.8 feet around 8:15am then back out to a 1.7 foot low at 1:30pm about 40-50 people out.

Surf's up a notch but SW wind is not helping. Surf is in the head to overhead range and it's all over the place. Large, shorter period NW windswell mixing it up with a long period SW swell. Sets are long closed out walls and there are plenty of doubled up waves. Lumpy sea surface conditions. But, there are 3 distinct peaks this morning that are producing some juicy left handers. One is south of the reef; one right on the reef and the other directly in front of the ramp. Tide is perfect at 3.6 feet right now. Next low tide of 1.4 feet is at 12:45om.

Plenty of people; a lot more wind and SW swell still predominating. Chest to shoulder high surf this morning. Not as consistent as yesterday and a steady westerly wind has put a bump on the water and a crumble on the waves. Sets are long, walled up, closed out lines. There are some pop up peaks here and there; these are the ones to track down. Tide is high but at a perfect place for Del Mar. Low tide (1.5) is at noon. About 40 people out.

Less wind; more surf. Dominant SW swell is producing some waist to chest to head high surf this morning. Smooth sea surface conditions with a light south breeze. Long lulls; high tide. Some large sets and out there but they are walked up and closing out. And no street parking. At all. Streets have been resurfaced and are now being striped.

More wind; less surf. Strong, steady SW winds blowing out the ankle to knee high dribble. Heavy chop on the water, poor overall conditions. Tide is dropping to 0.0 feet at 8:30am. Next high tide is at 3:30pm (4.4). I know, I know; this is getting boring, will the surf ever return? And will you be here when it does? Stay tuned. 3 people out.

Wind's on it. Healthy SW wind this morning causing bump, crumble and poor overall conditions. Surf wise we have some knee to waist high short interval windswell. No shape, no form. -0.5 tide in about half an hour then back up to a 4.3 high at 2:30pm. No one out.

Short one this morning; did the report from the Coaster on my way downtown for jury duty. Small and weak surf this morning, exacerbated by the -1.0 low tide. Knee high at best. Smooth sea surface conditions, overcast skies. 2 people out.

Awesome conditions. For walking. A -1.4 tide has opened up vast tracts of beach. Meanwhile in the water, we have knee to waist high surf with not much of anything to it. Smooth sea surface conditions. A freshening SW breeze swirling about. Next high tide (4.4) is at 12:30 pm. 3 people out.

Fun while it lasted. But for now, the swell is gone. Soft, ankle to knee high with glassy, overcast conditions. No wind. And the dolphins are getting some serious air right outside the surf zone. Tide is coming up but it's not even back to zero yet so there's lots of beach real estate for walking this morning. Max tidal inflow around 9am then on to a 4.5 high at noon. 5 people out.

Slightly smaller surf; way less crowd. Mostly chest to shoulder high with overhead sets. Long lulls. Sets are still walled up, warbly and closing out. But there are a few more opportunities to snag a decent shoulder in between the sets, especially south of the reef. Glassy conditions; no wind; incoming tide (4.7@9am). 0.9 low tide at 2pm. Overcast skies; ceiling right on the deck; no horizon. About 30 people out.

The shift is on! The tide (high), size (overhead), swell angle (SW), and shape of the surf(walled up and closed out) has shifted the line up way north this morning. Large sloppy surf. This swell is simply overwhelming Del Mar. Fairly smooth sea surface; some light NW breezes. Very large crowd (50+ and rising). Low tide will show up at 2pm (0.8 feet).

Shoulder to head to overhead on the sets. Nice SW swell has filled in giving us some of the largest surf in a while. Here at 15th street the swell angle is not ideal so we have some long walls and close outs to contend with. But every once in a while there are some choice waves with that classic Del Mar left that runs on and on. SW wind starting to ramp up but the sea surface is still fairly smooth. About 20 people out. Tide is just now at it's peak (4.4). At 10:30am the ebb flow will max out and give us a 0.6 foot low at 1pm.
