With my internal clock 2 hours ahead, it took all I could do to stay in bed until 5am Hawaiian time. The sun wouldn't rise for another 2 hours but I got up, made some coffee and listened to the surf on the barrier reef and the paper delivery van racing around the neighborhood tossing out the Saturday edition onto driveways and walkways. Thunk, skid; thunk, skid.
After my second cup of joe, the sky began to lighten and the outlines of two nearshore islands, Moku Iki and Moku Nui; bird sanctuaries known as the Mokuluas, started to come into focus. Since this is the east side of Oahu, sunrise is when we get to see the blazing orb, but it is rising from the sea; not sinking into it.
Soon I could make out lines of surf close to the islands and a barrier reef next to them. It's at least a half mile paddle to the line up and there were already two guys about a third of the way out. Ken's kindred spirits? Soon there was a flotilla of SUPers on their way out to join them.
From my perch the conditions looked pretty good. Light breeze, no surface bump and about waist to shoulder high. It has stayed that way for most of the day.
Have a good one.
Aloha
Gary
