Stormy
And an almost 7.0 high tide. Add strong westerly winds. Mix well. What have you got? Crummy surf, that's what.

High tide and
Fog are on tap for this morning. Long, lined up chest to shoulder to head high surf. Mostly closing out with some rare shoulders and faces for some short rides. Sets are washing through, taking the line up with it. Overall, it needs less water and more focus. Glassy conditions; about 12 people out.

At Terra Mar...
This morning. A little slow but able to handle the swell much better than Del Mar. About waist to chest with good shape and tide. Inconsistent sets are showing up about head high. Slight offshore breeze. About 10 people at Igors and 15 at Middles. Looks fun.

Yep, it's big...
Head to head and a half at 15th street. Larger bombs every now and then. Walled up and closing out right on the reef. The line up south of the reef has the best shape, offering up some big fat lefts that can go for quite a ways.
Tres Palms and 20th street are mackin' at 1.5 the size on the reef. No one out there. About 20 out at 15th street. Kinda sketchy here. Need someplace that can better focus this energy.

Nice day....
Weather wise. Surf wise; eh, not so much. Knee to waist high, breaking close to shore with some inconsistent slightly larger set waves. No wind, smooth sea surface. 15 people and about 500 birds out. Dolphins have corralled a ball of bait fish about 400 yards out and the birds and dolphins are gorging.

Surf is hangin' on
Size has dropped and it's not as consistent but there is still some surf. About chest to shoulder high with fair shape. Light surface bump and a rising tide. Rights look better than the lefts. About 15 people out. Man, I wish the sun would hurry up a crest that hill behind me; need some solar energy.
This is a set:

Cleaner
And smaller with better shape and conditions. Waist to shoulder with some open faces. 5.8 high tide right now so it's breaking close in. The reef is soft; tres palmas is standing up and pitching with the sets closing out. About 15 people out.

Large
Lumpy and lined up. Shoulder to head high and plus on the sets. Not well organized or focused with lots of bump in the water. Tons of water moving around and some high tide bounce off the bluffs. No lulls; it's a challenging paddle out. Best bet is the channel south of the reef. If you like big and sloppy, this is your day.

More swell
Wednesday, January 8, 2014
Things are picking up
New swell has filled in. Mostly waist high with some shoulder high sets. Lined up on the inside but the reef has some pick and choose corners and some smooth faces for some fun rides. Tide is going to bottom out around 10 and the wind is calm and the sea surface is smooth.

Not much change
Still flat but with some wind riffle. The arrival of a new swell is making itself known with some waist high sets. Don't expect too much from that till later in the day.
It's a bright sunny day and there are more than a few whales about 1/2 mile out making their way south to their Baja Sur calving grounds. Bring your binoculars.

Ok, break time is
Over. Time to go back to work or whatever it is you normally do outside of those 6 weeks commonly referred to as the holiday season.
The surf has done the same; it's basically flat with occasional periods of more flatness.
How flat is that you ask? There are parking places everywhere flat. That's how flat it is.
The sun is out, sea surface conditions are excellent and it's going to be a nice day here in San Diego.

Fog monster
Is lurking just south and north of 15th street this morning. Surf is waist to chest; fair shape. Surface conditions are good and the tide is on the rise. Breaking close to shore but there are some sets that offer up a bit of a shoulder and a decent ride. And there are still some head high sets swinging through every now and again.
Have a good one

Sneaky
Good surface conditions. Surf is mostly in the waist to chest high range and breaking close to shore. There are some lulls so getting out isn't much of a problem. Then momma O gets sneaky and pitches you a set of about four waves, all lined up, overhead close outs. Which you weren't ready for since the take off zone is so far inside. So relax, ice cream headaches are par for the course this time of year.
Aloha
