Bright, sunny & small

Knee to waist high negative tide lines. Sectiony and close outs too. Some double ups as this is a short period windswell. Just a hint of an offshore flow. Fairly weak overall but man it is a BEAUTIFUL morning. 12 people out working on their tans.

Well, conditions are excellent!

Glassy. Not a breath of wind. South swell is just about gone and has been replaced by a westerly swell angle. Which isn't 15th street's favorite direction. The minus tide is contributing to long walled up lines and some close outs as well. Surf is running about waist to chest high with poor to fair shape. A slightly higher tide is going to prove things a lot. Could even be fun!

Large South Swell Piles onto La Jolla Reefs

The Windansea lineup

Well, this south swell was a bit much for Del Mar so I decided to travel a few miles down the coast to see how some of the La Jolla reefs were doing.  A reef just south of Children's Pool (where a sponger ask me not to post any photos of the place on the internet. Right, a La Jolla secret spot), Horseshoes, Windansea and Big Rock were all looking pretty good.  But, the sets were too much for any of those places to handle. Big messy close outs on the sets with some nice bowls and shoulders on the in betweeners.  Not the biggest swell, nor the shapeliest but there were some nice rides nonetheless.  Take a look:

7 waves to a set

So unless it's your ride in; don't take the first wave of the set. Despite the long lulls that will allow you to paddle out this morning, this swell is overpowering the 15th Street set up. Sets are 8-10 feet and closing out when they hit the reef. In between stuff is head high with a few corners and some fast and furious rides. A NW breeze is beginning to freshen but it's not tweaking conditions right now. About 30 people out and more looking.

Point breaks and places with bottom conditions better able to focus this swell is what you should be looking at today and probably for the duration of this swell.
