Low tide; shoulder high surf
Surf has kicked up a notch this morning. More west in it so it's a bit faster as well. Even some close outs here and there. Waist to chest; larger on the sets. It was glassy but an eddy circulation has already begun to put some serious ripple on the water; fair shape. Shape should improve with incoming tide. About 30 people out. Water is 70-72, so that's nice. Now how about some sun?

The south swell
Has disappeared and in it's place we have a very short period WNW wind swell. And a nasty south wind that has blown out the line up. And a giant rip. Basically the total opposite of yesterday.
Windy, choppy and bumpy conditions with waist to chest high sloppy surf. Not much of a surf day here in Del Mar but the sun is out, the air is warm and the Del Mar Fair is on. Not too shabby.

Less consistent
But the waves are still there. Waist to chest high with fair shape. Sets in the shoulder to head high range. Still sort of mushy till the inside section but fun. What troubling is the west wind that's trying to get going. Water is warm and the living is easy.

Swell is holding.
But a south wind is already on it. Conditions are rapidly deteriorating and the surf along with it. Waist to chest high with some slightly larger set waves. Inside sections offering the best faces; it gets really soft and slow further out on the reef. Tres Palmas is standing up a little more but shorter rides to go with it. I'd say that "you really missed it" if you weren't here before the wind picked up (yes, that would include me).

More swell; more surf
More energy and focus this morning. Southerly swells giving us waist to chest waves with good to fair shape. Still a bit soft but the sets are producing some decent faces. Some swirling breezes but still a fairly glassy sea surface. Water temp is flirting with 70 degrees so thinner or no wetsuits are what's happening. This would be a good day to call in "too well to work" or say that an offsite board meeting has just come up. Better hurry though cause I think the wind is going to come up fast b

Starter home on the beach; Del Mar
Good conditions with a little of that south swell showing up here and there. Knee to waist high breaking waaay inside. Warm water. Rare set waves (actually, set wave) are your best bet. But be prepared to wait for them. 10 people out.
Yesterday was much smaller with no chance of ridable waves so Chuck and I broke out mask and fins and dove the reef to see what was what. It's healthy but still lots of sand covering it. Good populations of Calico bass, perch and the occasional sting ray hovering in the eel grass.
Now about that starter home on the beach...

In the immortal words of Ron Burgundy...
"
Stay glassy San Diego!" Well, it is that but even less surf than yesterday. Ankle to knee high "things" slowly but surely making their way to shore where they collapse in a wet, mushy heap. Where a sea lion is lurking, hoping to get lucky. The crowd, 27, is all out of proportion to the surf. But hey...

Weak Wednesday
Soft, mushy knee to waist high short period windswell surf. Poor to fair shape. Light SSE breeze and ebbing tide. A -0.2 at 8:30 this morning. The rare sets are peaking and then flattening out as the roll inside; maybe we'll see some improvement with the tide push later this morning.

It's never a good sign
When the dawn patrol is out of the water before 7. We have an incoming tide but it's is super low right now and doesn't fill in till around 11. This is affecting the size and shape if our surf this morning. Mostly knee to waist high with an occasional chest high set wave. Poor to fair shape; not much wind but just a hint of morning sickness on the water. A Friday crowd is on hand (20 or so) but manageable. I think it will get better with more tide but that's going to be a race with the parking meter readers and/or the wind.

Good conditions, so-so surf. About knee to maybe waist high; somewhat larger on the sets. Shape is poor to fair with not much of length of ride as the wave flattens out moving over the holes in the bottom. About 25 people out; bunched together on the reef. Tide is low now but incoming with a high around 10am.

Dolphins in the shore break!
Way inside of everyone else. Picking off the choicest shore break gems. Surf is ankle to knee high, inconsistent and slow. Occasional larger sets but you have to be able to surf like a dolphin to make it work this morning. Glassy conditions with some swirling breezes just now showing up.

Terra Mar
Things are kinda slow here this morning. Glassy conditions with small, slow surf. Thigh high at Igor's and about waist high at Middles. The sets are offering a little more size but they are; one wave sets and about 15 minutes apart. Middles is more consistent. About a dozen people out.

And then there were none...
Very small scale short period wind swell this morning. Ankle to knee high with poor shape. Tide is still on its way out as is the crowd. There is none. As in no one is out. Still, the water is warm and it looks like it's going to be a very nice day. So break out the mask and fins and explore the reef.

Getting smaller...
Size has dropped off considerably leaving us with knee to thigh high surf. Weak, short period windswell is providing most if the energy this morning. Poor to no shape at all. Tide is still on its way out so things might get slightly better with some tide push. Light NE wind with some surface riffle. Good day for...
