Tricky stuff

Bumpy and lumpy conditions with a very light off shore flow. But no amount of offshore wind will clean this up. Very short period westerly wind swell that is very consistent and colliding with itself. Waist to chest high, poor shape, 15 guys out. There are some rare peaks that can offer a steep drop and short ride but you really have to be in the right spot at the right time. Air temp is about 56-57.

If you were thinking

That some of that NW swell might have made it around the corner at Pt. Conception, you were wrong. Pretty much the same as yesterday but with a south wind. That's right, a dreaded wave killing south wind. Knee to waist high shore break with some fatter sets showing but just slowly rolling eastward before dying on the sand. Fair to poor conditions with marginal surf. But here's a tip: I have to work tomorrow so the surf should come up (story of my life).

If anyone knows what this means please enlighten us all.

Some surface texture this morning...

No wind or breeze. Small scale (knee to thigh high) short period wind swell leftovers are providing the bulk of the stoke this morning. Mostly closed out shore break although some teaser sets on the reef now and again. But the sweepers are getting all of those. 10 people out.

Well, at least it's Friday.

Perfect conditions; not much surf to speak of. Southerly swell is gone and in its place we have a weak 270 W wind swell. Mostly knee to waist high shore break and poor shape.
Still, there are 15 people at the reef trying desperately to make something of it.

More size

But not so much shape. Bumpy surface conditions with a SW breeze. Mostly slow waist high + surf that is backing off and not breaking till it hits the inside. That may be due to a fat (6.0) incoming tide. However, the surf from about the lifeguard station northward to 22nd street is standing up a throwing out some chest to shoulder high barrels. So, we have poor to fair conditions and marginal surf on the reef and some shortboard heaven to the north. Your call.

Ho Hum

A grey featureless morning at 15th street. Fair surface conditions with some south swell showing from time to time. Also in the mix is a NW windswell. Mostly knee to waist high. Not breaking till well inside and then just dumping on the sand. Slight onshore breeze. Not much to ride this morning so I hope you got your fill late last week. I did.

Welcome to the show

Well, the surf is here and so are the crowds. Chest to shoulder high with some shoulders but some close outs too. Very inconsistent and lully which helps explain the 50+ people in the line up. Best it's been in quite a while so get on down and ride ride ride the wild surf!

Smallsville, Part II

Even smaller this morning. Except for an occasional southern waist high line that doesn't break, it's flat. But, according to the surf prognosticators, this was expected. The new southern hemi swell will fill in throughout the day and by sunset we should know the size and quality of the surf for Thursday and on into the weekend.

A moderate NW wind has already put some ripples in the water but not enough to get worried about.

So, I, like everyone else in San Diego, am looking forward to some decent surf in the coming days. So that means your favorite break will likely be a tad clogged. Just be patient.

Rainbow!!

And a double one at that. Very lumpy surface conditions. Waist to maybe chest high wind swell peaks all over the place. Not much focus or length of ride but way better than anything in the last 3 weeks. Heavy mist in the air, 13 people out.

Almost

But not quite. Some promising lines here and there but they end up as knee high shore break. Glassy conditions, cooler water and tons of seaweed on the inside.

YouTube Video

Tropical haze hugging the coast. Small, weak dribbles mostly. 11 people out. I don't know why; someone should ask them.

This place is still a...

As September Pushes In

The crowds begin their slow fade. This is one of San Diego's finest seasons. Warm water, moderate to small crowds and...south swells.

Some of that southern energy is showing this morning. Glassy conditions, weak knee high shore break and the occasional bigger set that pops up but goes nowhere. More energy than yesterday but still not enough to put a smile in your face.
