Good conditions

Finally, the eddy has backed off a little! Calm winds, mostly glassy with a 2-3 foot windswell passing through. Sets are a bit larger but it's the in between stuff that offers the most potential. Medium tide. The odarkthirty crew is starting to leave and the second shift is suiting up. About 15 guys out.

Still some sizable surf...

Accompanied by strong south winds and a low tide. Chest to shoulder (slightly larger on the sets) very short period wind swell trying desperately to make sense of the deteriorating conditions. As are about 10 people out in the line up. Lots of white water and not much in the way of rideable waves. Showing biggest north of the reef at the sandbar off of Tres Palms. Cloud cover is beginning to part so it should be a great day here in sunny Del Mar.

A shift

In swells has taken place. The southerly ground swell is just about gone and a much shorter period wind swell is swarming in. Chest high, right on top of each other, no focus and crappy shape. 2 people out. Oh, and there is some surface bump and a falling tide (-.8 @ 8am). Sounds good, eh?

That was intense...

The M-Day crowd overwhelmed 15th street yesterday. It started at 7am and lasted well into twilight. Looks much better now.

So, for surf this morning we have some jumbled up, doubled up chest to shoulder high waves. A fair amount of surface bump and the tide is still dropping to a -1.3 around 7am. SE wind, fair to poor conditions and shape. About 6 guys out. Not that great but at least the water's warm (65-68). BTW, that's Frank in the video getting an assist from his jet powered board.

Not so much...

Bumpy, choppy surface conditions. Wind out of the SW has put a crumble on it. There's a swell in the water and a crowd too. About 15 guys out jockeying for position, getting faked out by the double ups and closed out sets. Lots of whitewater. About chest to shoulder high and bigger sets. Not many shoulders, open faces or length of ride. But the clouds have parted and the sun is out!

Ok, what's going on here?

South wind, messy conditions and no one out. The swell has stuck around, chest to shoulder and larger on the sets but the crummy conditions have negated just about all of that energy. Poor conditions, poor shape, what a waste. But I guess we can't have it good every day, right?

You shoulda been here yesterday...

Blown out already. South winds are tearing it up. Too bad because it's bigger than yesterday with consistent head high and head high plus sets. And the water is 65-67! 6 people out vainly looking for that rare open face for a ride in. Oh well, there's always maƱana.

Photos from this morning's "And it Just Keeps Coming" post...

The waves at 15th street this morning were probably some of the best we've had in a while.  Not epic but still, a big, fat south swell from just the right direction (225 degrees). It was very clean, the eddy winds backed down, the crowd thinned out and the crew went to work.  It was pick and choose and the set waves were closing out but if you knew the break (and you could tell who did and who didn't) there were some real head high waves.  Check it out:

And it just keeps coming

Better conditions today, although the eddy wind is swirling a bit it's not enough to mess with it. Mostly shoulder to head high and plus on the sets. The high tide has sucked some of its juice but not all of it. Long, long lulls between sets so getting out is a little easier today than the last two. Fair shape; the largest of the set waves are closing out. About 30 people out.

South swell!

Much cleaner this morning. The windswell has faded away leaving the southern ground swell unmolested. Mostly shoulder to head high, long lulls with fair shape. Sort of walled up, even on the reef but if you can snag one of those big, fat set waves going left you are going to remember it. About 12 people out.

Not looking too good my friends

Poor surface conditions with SSE winds, doubled up short period swell, and few faces to work with. Waist high, chest to shoulder sets. About 6 people out bobbing to and fro scrambling for that occasional south swell lefty that crumbles through.

Mixed up

No, not me; the surf. Poor surface conditions with a hodge podge of swells slamming into each other and topped off with a SSE wind. Waist to chest high crumblers; not much there. 4 people out trying to make something of it but mostly just getting thrashed about.

Looks like it's a go...

At least that's what Luke, Chuck, Terry and Frank are telling me. I don't know; all I can see is an instant crowd. Glassy conditions, waist to chest with fair shape, and mostly medium period wind-swell. There is some south swell poking up now and again and those have the best shape, size and length of ride. Could use a bit more water and the rising tide will take care of that.

Was just speaking with a guy here on vacation from New Jersey. Says the water temp there has finally started to rise; it's in the mid 40's!! Makes this seem almost tropical. Almost.

Sunny Daze

I know we needed that bit of rain recently but man, I love these mornings that are sunny and warm right out of the gate!

Good surface conditions with just a tiny bit of lump from the crossed up left over wind swell. That stuff is in the knee to waist range with fair shape. The southerly sets are in the waist to chest range with poor to fair shape. Long waits for those and only 2-3 waves per set. The poo index is probably around 5 or so today and should be within safe limits by tomorrow. So, until then...

Clearing skies...

Head high sets and wind at my six. Good surface conditions with mostly knee to waist high windswell. More substantial southerly pulses every 10-15" but not much shape there. Poo index meter is still pegged at "11", so I'm resisting the urge to paddle out; you should too. The risk is not worth the mush burger wave you may slide into. Nevertheless 4 loonies are out in the line up.

More rain?

Well, not at the present time anyway. Thigh to waist high, breaking way inside with good surface conditions. Not much power, shape or length of ride. And the poo index is likely off the charts. So anyone going out today is a fool. Or a gambler. Or a dunce. Or has a super duper immune system. 12-24 hours for intestinal distress; same for ears and sinus; 4-6 weeks for the various stains of hepatitis to incubate. 3 people out there tempting fate.

As you'd expect...

South winds, choppy seas and pretty funky surf. Knee to thigh high wind swell stuff. No shape and no one out. As it should be.

Crossed up

Some of the south swell is hanging around but somewhat smaller than yesterday. Localized wind swell in the mix this morning crossing up those long south lines. Mostly waist to almost chest high. Soft, rolley peaks that are backing off; best on the inside or if you can track down a set wave. 5 people out; Chuck and Luke warming the bench; waiting for something. Sun's out and heating up fast.

Could this be the day?

Clean conditions although a NW breeze is beginning to pick up. Long waist to chest (bigger on the sets) southerly lines moving through giving the crew plenty to work with. Fair to good shape but some long lulls too. 15 people out, mostly south of the reef. Wind is picking up and starting to put a wrinkle on the water so if you're going to hit it...
