Big Change!
Grey skies, offshore breeze, clean conditions, and weak, weak surf. The waves are actually cleaner and not as jumbled as yesterday, there's just not a lot of energy in them. Knee to waist, backing off and long lulls. 6 people out. Perfect day to bring your cousins from Kansas down to the beach to try out that "surfing thang".
This is my last post for a while. Karen and I are embarking on a mega road trip to see some parts of the country we haven't visited before. I will be posting some photos and narrative about that but I'm thinking it will be on a new blog site or Facebook. Later

Quick, what's wrong with this picture?
If you guessed "sunshine" you'd be right. That's right, no photoshop here, the sun is out from the get go. A rare event in the summer. In San Diego.
On to the surf; knee to waist high very short period wind swell peaks with not much of a length of ride. Pretty weak overall with poor to fair shape and some morning sickness to top it off. About 20 guys out; paddling here and there trying to run down a corner or shoulder. A futile endeavor.
Still the gulls are feasting on the overflowing trash cans, the sun is out and the water is warm. What more could one want? Some surf? Nah, don't be greedy.

Wavy Gravy
About the same as yesterday but a lot more mixed up. Waist to chest high scattered peaks with a few shoulders here and there. Doubling up and some left over wind bump confusing things immensely. Ebb tide and a giant rip (or series of connected rips) from the northern edge of the lawn to just south of the ramp.
There are some shoulder high southerly sets showing up every 15-20". Over all; poor+ conditions with poor to fair shape and mid 60's water temp.

Yowza!
Minus tide, south wind, Friday crowd and marginal surf. Chuck gave it a "1 thumbs down"; Kenny (as usual) said it was better earlier. For those of you who don't know Kenny "earlier" means zero dark thirty. You know, that before dawn time when the great whites are trolling for food.
Anyway, we've got some waist to shoulder high close outs trudging through this morning. A bit bigger on the sets but no shoulders at all. At least 25 people in the water, maybe more. I think Chuck's 1 thumbs down call is the right one.

The Times They Are A Changing
That's right, it's SUMMER!!! Hot time, summer in the city; and what better place to be than San Diego? But I digress. On to the surf report.
Waist to chest high, building south swell producing some low tide closed out lines. Poor + shape right now although the left to the south is overhead and pitching on the rare south sets. You might want to check that out. Otherwise it's a lot like yesterday; long waits, long walls, short rides. It may get better with more tide but that will be a race with the wind.

ISD
Well, it's ISD but someone forgot to let the surf gods in on the secret. Waist to chest high short period wind swell with poor to fair shape; sort of crumbly and sectiony. Light wind out of the west and low tide have conspired to produce some major warble but there are 15 guys out. But hey, it's ISD so get out there!

Leftovers
Small scale (knee to waist high) junk with moderate bump on the water. Poor + shape, fair to poor conditions with light swirling breezes. Barely rideable with 8 people out.
Remember, tomorrow is national surf day. A day to ditch work, school, whatever and get out in the water. Rekindle your stoke!!

Not Glassy!
Friday, June 15, 2012
Join the crowd!
20+ people out in some raging waist to shoulder junk. Groomed by steady south wind; faced with a rising tide, this is going to be one forgettable surf day. Even though a head high southerly set pushes through now and again, you are going to need your motivational fires burning brightly to step into the liquid this morning. Stupid eddy!

More size
Than yesterday but the quality of the swell has deteriorated (you can relax now Chuck). A much shorter period NW wind swell has taken hold offering up waist to chest high peaks with marginal shape. Fairly clean surface conditions with some light swirling eddy breeze. Tide is still coming up which is holding back the waves some. Snappiest in the inside "shortboard alley" section; have to bide your time on the outside lineup. Not a great surf day but not horrible either. In any event...

Smooth as Silk
Glassy conditions on tap this morning with some nice looking waist to chest high peaks. Rising tide has taken the edge off but there are still classic rides to be had. Overcast and misty with 5 people out, including Luke and Chuck. Guess I'll join them!

Tide's a bit fat
But it's clean and well formed. Not as big as yesterday but looking like way more fun. Waist to chest high with some larger south sets (inconsistent as usual); 6 guys out. So, if you've got some spare time this morning you should come on down.

Her Name is Aphrodite
And she rides a crimson shell; wait, that just Luke on his new red board! Fairly clean conditions with some chest to shoulder to head high set waves. Mostly closed out but there are some decent shoulders here and there. You just have to hunt them down. There's still some wind swell out there as well; crossing things up a tad. Best waves are middle in; sets are closed out bombs for the most part. Tide is quickly sucking out and there is a building onshore.

The Tempest has Moved On
We still have a morning minus tide but the swell and conditions have cleaned up considerably. Light surface bump, some swirling eddy breeze, chest to shoulder high sets, 14 guys out.
NW wind swell still predominates but with a lot less intensity and much longer period. I'd say if your desperate a go out would be a consideration. But you might want to get out there before these guys do.

Still Messy
It's like the ocean is having trouble making up its mind; there's waves, but in no particular place and seemingly without purpose. Shoulder to head high, short period, closed out wind swell lines. Tons of whitewater Rideable yes. Surfable no. Needs more swell focus and way more tide. Till then...

It's Big...
But it's funky and junky. Shoulder to head high (larger on the sets) rolling through some serious morning sickness. Overnight winds have left us with lump and bump that is almost as big as the surf. Poor shape. Poor conditions. And it looks like its chewing up the bottom; there is a serious rip from just north of the ramp all the way south to the reef. Ugly, ugly, ugly.
But on a brighter note, Venus safely made it across the face of the sun, elections were held, things were won and lost; yet we are still here. Enjoying this beautiful day in this most beautiful place!

More of the same
Except with a minus tide. Waist, maybe chest high, wind blown junk. West winds, white caps here and there, nobody out. Priceless. Good morning for a beach walk. With this tide you could probably hike from here all the way to flat rock at Torrey Pines; and back.
If you get a chance, be sure to check out the Venus transit at sundown tonight. Get your eclipse shades at the Rubin E. Fleet Science Center.

A Fickle Mistress
After a near perfect morning of surf yesterday, we now have a severe case of morning sickness. Sir Eddy is spitting out a nasty west wind and drizzle that have really funked it up. Choppy, bumpy surface conditions, with weak waist to chest high crumbly surf on tap. 12 people out. Don't bother making it 13.
