Clear, Cool Water
But no waves. Smaller than yesterday and breaking even closer in. Knee high slow rollers with occasional waist high sets out of the south. Calm and glassy.
The water is Hawaii clear (but not Hawaii warm). The incredible visibility and lack of significant current is making for some excellent diving conditions. So, if you've ever wondered what the reef at 15th street looks like or what sorts of sea life populate our near shore waters, today would be a good day to bring your mask, snorkel, and fins down to the beach. The view is amazing!

Although
Some people I know might tell me "wait for the tide to change" or "it's better than it looks", I'm going to go out on a limb and say its FLAT. Calm and glassy but flat, flat, flat. And neither the tide or your perception of what "good" is will change that.
Great conditions for diving. In fact, I've seen several groups of free divers the last few days with dive bags full of lobster. And the occasional sea bass stuck on the end of a spear.
I'm heading to Flagstaff for the rest of the week so no CSSRs till the weekend.

Good news & Bad news
Good news: the high school surf PE class is not here.
Bad news: neither are the waves.
Essentially flat. There are a few ankle snappers at Tres Palmas but that's about it. Good conditions though. No wind, glassy and an ultralight crowd; 10 people. Sun should be out later this morning along with south westerly winds. Water's still cold (61). Oh well.

Cold Water
Water temp has dropped 4-5 degrees; not winter cold but cold enough. Calm, glassy, high tide and minimal surf to go with your cold water. Waist high (at best) short period windswell breaking close to shore. Not much there, except the Torrey Pines surf PE class.
They are getting to be a real pain. 35-40 groms clotting the line up almost every single morning. Which was ok when their coach had them go out by the lifeguard tower. Now they get dropped off by mom or dad at the lawn and invade the reef like the clueless gremmies they are.

Grey Day
Monday, October 17, 2011
Ahh! Finally it's Monday!
And the crowds have vanished. A little fog this morning but it looks like that will pull back shortly. Clean conditions, calm winds and some surf in the knee to waist high range. 3 people out. Somewhat inconsistent but the tide and the lack of a crowd make it worth a go. Not too much juice but lots of waves all to yourself. Gotta love Mondays!

Standin' at the Station
At 15th street teardrops filling up my eye. That's because it's way smaller than yesterday and at least twice as crowded! It's just not right.
Clean conditions, no wind, waist to shoulder high on the sets; 40, that's right 40, people in the water. Great waves for about 10 people max so you can imagine that the waves are a tad bit crowded. But hey, enough about how I feel; it looks fun. And it will be just as soon as the "gotta get to work" crew leaves.

The World is Made of Energy
And this morning there's some for you and me. NW swell arrived overnight producing some rather large sets; head high and then some. In between it's waist to chest high, clean conditions, calm wind and about 20 guys out. Swell direction has too much west in it for 15th street so the sets are closing out.
Come on down and soak up some energy!

More, Thicker Fog
Foggy, clean, light breeze and about waist high; maybe larger on the sets (hard to tell). The waves are having a little trouble pushing through the tide so it's breaking pretty close in. Looks like about 10 guys out; all south of the reef. Oh, and it's cold and damp.

Fog Monster!
After 3 or 4 sunny days in a row the fog monster has gobbled up the beach. Can't even see the line up all that well but it looks pretty weak on the reef. High tide is not helping. Tres Palmas has some waist to chest high peaks pushing through; that would be your best bet.
One good thing is that the crowd that snaked our break this weekend has departed. Gone back to LA along with the Sacred Craft Surf Expo. The expo itself was great fun but the crowd it imported with it was a bit much. It was like surfing at Hermosa beach; clogged line up, rude personalities and fierce competition for marginal waves.
Me, Chris Dixon and Brad Long at the Sacred Craft event. Chris is the author of Ghost Wave. A new book about Cortez Bank. My book was the first that Chis signed!

Photos: Solid Surf at 15th Street
Friday; day 2 post storm. Crisp and clear; solid surf, clean conditions. Autumn in San Diego. Who says we don't have seasons?

Offshore and Cold!
Clean conditions but dirty water from the rain on Wednesday. Head high plus with fair to good shape. Bigger sets are closing out so you have to pick and chose or you'll get thumped big time. 15 guys out. All sitting well outside the usual lineup. Not too much to ride in-between sets. But the waves are beautiful this morning. Will have some photos up later today.

The Wicked Wind Whispers
And moans. Guess what? It's blown out! 12 knot WNW winds already. And as you can see in the photo, terrible storm damage here in Del Mar.
Storm surf is running head high and then some. No one out. Good day to catch up on stuff you've been putting off for whatever reason.

That Pesky
Red tide is still hanging around and there is no surf to speak of this morning. Short period knee high (maybe) wind swell peaks all over the place. Calm conditions; nobody out. There is, however, a rainbow out. Promise of future surf? One can only hope.
