Sloppy, very sloppy

Wind is finally not a factor but it's a disorganized mess out there this morning. Chest to shoulder to head high. Mostly poor shape with an occasional corner here and there. Giant rip right in front of the ramp is really putting a kink in the water. 2 guys just now paddling out. Let's see what happens.

Guy on longboard just had an early lunch. Same with the shortboarder. Ok, so much for the reef. Restaurants is bigger and steeper and about 10 guys out. Getting very intense, short rides with a barrel here and there.

Forget the Surf Reports; This Is How It Really Was

In front of Restaurants
This is the kind of weather we expect in April.  What is going on here?  This has to be the longest consecutive run of crummy conditions and crappy surf since... (fill in the blank).  And, to add insult to injury, the upwelling has pushed the water temps back down.  Nice.
Saturday was rain and wind, Sunday was WIND and today was not as windy,  but windy enough so that things did not get a chance to settle down; it was messy, very messy.  And big.  A few hardy souls giving it a go, but not many rides and a few got swept many 100's of yards south trying to make it out; more than a few gave up and came back in before making it to what I laughingly refer to as the line up.

The only ones getting anything close to a good ride

Whump!

Foam ball

If the wind stops sometime today, there's a slim chance that tomorrow might, dare I say, be surfable.

Watch Out

Momma O is in one of her moods! Day after gale force winds conditions. Bumpy, choppy and rips everywhere. Short period hacked up wind swell dominates the break. Chest to shoulder with overhead sets and poor shape. Nobody out on the reef; 3 guys sitting way outside at about 11th street and three out at Restaurants. None of them having much luck.

Enjoy your day

Warbling Wednesday

A mix of swells has put some fair sized waves and shape in the water this morning. Chest to head high at the reef, about the same at Restaurants. 10 guys out including Kenny, Chuck and. (can it be!?) Luke. Good surface conditions with the crowd spread out along the reef. Looks like some fun waves out there.

I'm on my way out of here to Monterey for a few days. I'll be back in the line up Saturday.

Ruby Tuesday

Well, it's cleaned up some but it still looks slightly "homogenized" out there. Lumpy, bumpy and dominated by a short period wind swell. Chest to head high, bigger sets, and poor+ shape. 3 guys out at the reef, 1 or 2 at Restaurants (where it's steeper, meaner and closed out). Hardly any wind though.

Need Some Cheese

to go with that whine? I do. When is this wind going to stop? Strong south wind has it totally blown out this morning. Too bad, cause the new swell is showing. Head to head high plus might be throwing down some nice waves if not for this bloody wind.

This is so depressing that I'm actually thinking of forming a new group, Treasure Hunters, to comb the beach each morning with those metal detectors. Now that would be quite a sight; 15 or 20 people geared up with headphones, metal detectors and rubber boots, sweeping the beach each morning. Let me know if you're interested. I'll post your name for all to see

Big Wave Video

Will miss you guys in the water this morning but for good reason:  Ashley is graduating from CSUSM this morning.  I'll leave you with this incredible video.

Wild and Crazy!

Negative tide, substantial swell and head high surf. Some morning sickness out there and the shape is not the best but we do have some surf finally. Easterly breeze is swirling around right now; nobody out. Check that: there are 4 guys out at Restaurants.

Seems to be a lot if west in this swell so 15th street isn't going to like it all that much especially with this extreme neg tide. Terra Mar?

Not a surf day

Pretty much what you would expect in advance of the storm front; poor conditions defined by south winds, crumbly blown out surf and surface chop. Weak, closed out knee to waist high junk. No one out or here. Light mist swirling around but no real rain here yet. I thought we left this kind of weather back in March?

Almost Glassy!

Just a hint of a breeze this morning. Waist to chest high; looks a little inconsistent. Fair shape, 13 guys out. The only one I recognize is Chuck. This is the best day this week so far. I'd say if you get the chance you should be in the water at some point.

Hard to describe

The conditions today. Surface conditions are much much better but the surf, well let's just say it's a bit funky. Still short period wind swell that either rolls right on by or closes out. No shoulders to speak of. 11 guys out spread out across the reef. A west wind is beginning to pick up putting some unwelcome texture on the water. So, in short; fair conditions (about to change with the wind shifting around), marginal surf. There's always tomorrow!

Starting to clean up

Still a tad disorganized and not much in the way of shape but the wind has dropped off considerably and turned around and is now offshore. Chest to shoulder high, short period wind swell. Bigger in front of Restaurants but walled up and closing out. A little better on the reef but not much. 1 guy out. And the May gray has departed.

Two Reports Today

One for the half full crowd and one for the half empty crowd.

First, the half full view: it's a bit on the breezy side but there are waves everywhere. I mean everywhere! Waist to head high and, get this, no one is out! Plenty of room, plenty of waves.

Now the half empty view: 10-15 knot west winds have hacked it all to pieces. Total Victory at Sea conditions. No one out, or even here. Totally sucks!

Minus tide

And the lack of swell has 15th street on the tiny side this morning. Calm wind, good surface conditions and the occasional ankle slapper have coaxed 10 people into the lineup.
Ankle to knee high, inconsistent, poor to fair shape.

If you're close by you might want to check it out but I wouldn't put too many miles on the car for this.
