It's Hard to Say

If it's worth going out or not. On the one hand it's freezing cold and the surf kinda sucks but on the other hand Chuck is insisting that there are some good waves to be had. I think he's hallucinating but there are some rare waist high sets that sort of look like waves.

Only two guys out. Gotta think about this some.

Rollin' & Tumblin' Update!

Dropping tide. Clean, offshore and positively frigid. Mostly a waist to chest high lined up windswell with some overhead sets. Fair to poor shape. Kenny is back from Hawaii and is picking off the biggest of the set waves. 6 guys out. Me, I think I'm going to wait for some solar energy.

Talked with Kenny as he was getting out; reports there is a complete absence of temperature in the lineup.  Booties, gloves and squid lid time?

All Shook Up

It's got some size but it's hidden by the howling onshores that have been blowing all night. Not a surf day.

Lake Pacific

I've seen boat wakes bigger than the waves here this morning. Living up to it's name, all is calm in the eastern Pacific. Plus it's frackin' frosty. An offshore breeze is contributing a few degrees of windchill to make it actually cold by almost anyones standards.

So crawl back under the covers and use todays report to beat back any brewing case of surf anxiety that may be attempting to bubble up in you.

Sail on Sail on

Sailor, right on past this place. Great conditions, no wind, sun is out but it is flat. Ankle snappers at best with the occasional belly button set. 4 guys out scanning the horizon hoping beyond hope for a wave or two. Not much going on.

Been a Long Time

Since it's been this cold. Good conditions, almost no wind, waist high with some bigger sets. Kinda rolley but there are only 10 guys out. Looks like the lefts are working best.

Me, I'm waiting for the sun to illuminate the line up before I go out.

Happy tofurky day to one and all.

Hang It Up and See What Tomorrow Brings

Cause it's not a surf day today. Storm conditions; strong west wind, waist high chop, whitecaps everywhere. Nobody out; It's a mess.

On the bright side you have a lot of found time to get ready for tomorrow. Firm up travel plans, make the extra room ready for your relatives, mayday runs to the market for stuff you thought you had but now that you've checked, don't.

Call the Fire Wagon!

This place is on fire! Well sort of. A little. More so than yesterday.

Cleaned up a lot. Easterly winds grooming a short period west wind swell mixed in with a good sized northwest ground swell. Waist to shoulder high with freezing cold air temps driven even lower by the wind. 3 guys out. Sketchy water quality.

If you're coming down, recommend arriving with wetsuit in place; changing in the parking lot could kill your mojo.

Hey, hey

Bigger today. Still a messed up jumble but some shoulder high stuff rolling through. Light northeast wind, high tide, nobody out. Whitecaps showing out beyond the kelp bed.

Doesn't look like a surf day here.

For the past three Saturdays I've been working with a group of people from the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and Palomar College woodworking students to make wooden toys for distribution to charities benefiting families and children. This dump truck is one of the toys we made.

A Rare Sunday CSSR

Ok, I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know but you can relax and enjoy this blustery Sunday morning at home; no need to work up a nasty case of surf angst. There isn't any.

Total Victory at Sea conditions, high tide and that mean old nasty south wind. Not to mention all the crap in the water from the rain runoff. Definitely not a surf day and with more rain on the horizon we should expect crummy conditions and sick water quality for the next few days.

Friday at 15th Street

No fog this morning, but the swell has back off and the high tide is up against the bluffs. Waist to chest high rolling forever set waves with not much in between.

Slight surface bump; 12 guys out. Is probably worth a go before the sour weather appears tonight and through the week end.

Slow Ride

Glassy! Waist to shoulder high sets; long lulls; not much in-between. Fair shape, best lefts are on the north and south ends of the reef. 10 guys out (make that 11 as soon as I can get out there).

All in all, looking like a surf day here!

Fog Monster

Thick, thick fog; almost whiteout conditions. All I can see is the very inside lineup; thigh high close outs. No wind. I think there are 3 guys out but those are just who I saw paddle out. Don't know how many more may be bobbing around in the mists.

Waiting for the fog to lift might be an option but by that time the wind may be on it.

Monday Morning Shoes

Waist high, pretty clean with just a touch of surface bump. Slight offshores. Southerly swell direction this morning so there are some lulls between waves. Fair shape with 10 guys out. See you in the water.

Happy Friday!

Cleeeeean! Waist high, fair shape and moderate offshores. 10 guys out scattered along the reef. Long lulls. Going to be a good session if I can get the shivering under control.

Kenny just came in, Reid and Luke just getting in and Chuck and I getting ready.

Cleaner Than Yesterday

But still sort of crossed up. Shoulder to head high; bigger on the sets. Wind not as strong as yesterday. Short period, shifting peaks but some lulls make getting out doable, if you're lucky! Poor to fair shape, but if a set finds you in the right spot you can pick off a corner and scream (no, not like a girl; scream as in fast) down some sizable faces. If you're out of position, well, you're screwed. 15 guys out.

This is one if those days where it will improve with the tide and when the sun is on it.

Bigger Than It Looks

Shoulder high west swell pushing through but it's being severely hacked up by a very short period wind swell. Moderately fair surface conditions with some bump and ripple on it. Lots of doubling up. Air temp is 49 but an east wind is making it feel a tad bit cooler. Way cooler. Cold in fact.

15 guys out, mostly on the reef although there are a handful at Tres Palmas where it is definitely more vertical. Short rides; poor to fair shape.

Stormy Monday

As you would expect, today's conditions are stormy. Post stormy actually. 8-10 knot southwest wind, choppy, waist high slop. One guy out. Rising tide that is almost against the bluffs.

Front is moving off to the east so it will be clear later on but I imagine that the wind will get stronger as the day progresses.

Playback from this Morning at 15th Street

Looking North.  There was some size to it.
As most of you know by now, the surf was up in San Diego today.  I spent a few hours at 15th street this morning checking it out and grabbing a few frames.  I got there early, so early that there just weren't enough available photons to capture Ian's incredible left on the reef; it was one of the best of the morning.  A big, fat, juicy 8 footer peeling down the reef; what a sight.

Anyway, here are some images I did get once the sun came over the hill.  Enjoy.

A two shot sequence........1

.....and 2

Leaning into it.

A snappy 6 footer at Tres Palms

Late take off.....didn't make it.

Despite the crowd, this turned into a great left hander for this guy.

It's here!

You want it, you got it! Head high with head and a half sets. Really thick, heavy waves. Good surface conditions, hardly any wind. Long lulls so if you time it right you can get out without getting thumped too badly; but then again, just when you think you've made it to the line up you could be looking into the face of some monster clean up sets.

Shape is not that great; walled up with some pick off corners here and there. Lots of people on each wave. 30 to 40 guys out. Have fun!

Wait for it, wait for it

Not yet. No swell this morning. About the same as yesterday, thigh high rollers breaking way inside with poor shape.

Clean surface conditions, easterly flow with about 10 guys out. If you were out Sunday then you know exactly what it's like today. High surf alert begins at 5 pm today so I'll check back later to see what's up.

Pretty Bleak

Knee to waist high left overs. Clean surface conditions with a hint of offshores and high tide. 3 people out. Overall, weak, inconsistent and poor shape. Looks like it's shaping up to be a nice day here in San Diego; not a cloud in the sky.
