Solar Rays

Yea sun! Choppy surface conditions combined with a short period wind swell hitting a longer period WNW ground swell is making it pretty choatic out there this morning. A low tide is not helping out either.

Slight offshores and head high waves. Difficult to call that exactly as there is no one out so my sense of scale may be off some. It's probably bigger than it looks.

The male version of Bertha is here with his 12'+ board checking it out. Kinda hoping he goes out; just for the entertainment value.

I hear that the sunshine and warm weather will hold through the weekend. Sweet! But it's going to have to calm down and clean up a lot for surfable conditions.

Have a good one.

Thar She Blows!

Totally, completely blown out conditions! Wind is straight onshore; no swell line visible; whitecaps everywhere. Nobody out. Not even Ken.

This is going to take a few days to calm down and clean up. Maybe Saturday.

Have a good one.

The Search; Part III

It all started with an email to my surf buddies announcing that I was going to buy a new board since I inflicted a career ending injury to my trusty Hank Warner that I bought in 2001.

Right away Jon emailed me to say that I needed to become familiar with some of the more classic board designs and features in order to understand how they have evolved.  Jon has a collection of 67-68 era boards that represent the state of shaping knowledge and art at the cusp of the short board revolution.  He insisted that I needed to experience first hand how these boards perform and to better understand what I would want in a new board.  Having started surfing in 1963 I had an idea but that was a long time ago so on Sunday Jon and I hooked up and he introduced me to some of his boards.

He had about 10 boards to show me.  Jon knows the pedigree and design features of each board in meticulous detail.  Fascinating stuff and I appreciated the time he spent with me going through the features and shortcomings of each board.

I finally settled on a Hansen 50/50 model.  It is a 9' 6" pintail.  50/50 rails from just behind the nose to just forward of the tail.  The back rails are as sharp as a knife.  The fin attaches through the top of the board with a single "wonder" bolt.  Fortunately for me, Jon had a leash attachment point glassed onto the board.  I was looking for a board that could handle a leash since, a. I didn't want to lose it and have it wash up on the rocks and, b.  I wasn't  real keen on swimming after it after each wipe out.

A nice south swell was working at 15th Street in Del Mar on Monday so I put the sacred craft in the water and paddled out to the line up.  Easy paddling and fairly easy to punch through white water considering what it weighs.  As I tried to turn the beast in the first wave I felt like I was surfing in jello.  I was turning, but in sloooooooooooooooooow motion.  Fell off as the wave caught up with me but the leash held; whew, that was different.  Have to pivot turn this thing.  Next wave (a right) was a little better and actually got into trim position and got a fairly long ride.
Next ride ended with me muffing the kick out and the board going with the white water.  Felt the leash tug and then......arggggghhhhhhhhhh...nothing!  Turns out that the leash didn't break, Jon apparently tied the leash rope with a slip knot.  Fortunately Luke was on the inside and saw the board and captured it before it went on the rocks.  Tied the leash rope in a square know (Jon will never be able to undo it), went back out, caught one more wave and came in.

Later that day Ian called me to let me know that I could try out his Murphy long board if I wanted.  Since he offered to deliver it to me after work I said sure.  This is a nice board and I've seen Ian catch some incredible waves with it.  Maybe some of that skill would transfer to me through the board!  Could this be the magic stick I was looking for?  The swell on Tuesday was much the same as Monday; good stuff for trying out a new board.

Even though it is a little shorter, narrower, thinner, a 2 plus one fin set up, and much much lighter, it was a good paddler and eased into waves pretty nicely.  First wave was a learning experience but I was surprised at it's speed and responsiveness.  Next wave (a left) was really fun.  This board has an amazing ability to squirt under and around sections and keeps getting you back to the pocket.  And it's fast!  Took some measurements when I got back home and was surprised that it was only 9'.  Can't be more than 2 1/2" thick either.  Yet it floated me and I felt that it paddled really well; not pushing any water in the front.

So, thanks Jon and Ian.  I really appreciate your generosity and I learned a lot.

Next, Clay and I pay a visit to the South Coast Longboard shop in OB.

Rainy Day Schedule

Conditions aren't that bad considering that the south wind is already on it. Some surface bump but no whitecaps; yet. Waist to chest high crumblers with 5 guys out.

You should have been here yesterday. Man, you really missed it.

Light rain falling but the horizon is showing lighter skies and cumulus clouds. Wind is supposed to turn to
howling offshores later today. Resulting in small craft warnings.

Have a great one.

The Search; Part II

Last week Chuck and I went to three surf shops to see what was what.  Chuck had been bugging me to check out the Hansen shop.  He was sure they had the most and the best selection of what I am looking for.  So I relented and said OK, let's see what they've got.  What they've got is not very inspiring and very expensive.  They are almost as expensive as Mitch's in Solana Beach.  A few interesting 60's era restored boards, some standard issue modern long boards and the Hansen logs.  Ho-hum.

Next, we pushed on to the Becker surf shop just a few blocks north.  They had some really nice boards; surprisingly nice.  Three of their long board models, the San-O, the Legacy and the UFO stood out.  This San-O model is 9' 6", 23.25, 3.25 with 2 layers of 10oz volan on top and 1 layer on the bottom.  50-50 rails.  Really nice glassed on wood fin and a nice wide deck up front to hang out on.  Very heavy.  $850.  Not bad.

The Legacy model was just as nice with a more modern template and rails.  50/50 up front turning to 60/40 about half way back.  This board is 9' 6", 23, 3.25 with 2 layers of 6oz glass on top and 1 layer on the bottom.  Tri-fin set up.  And tail block.  This board looked like it would be a good point break board.  Much narrower nose that the San-O ending in a sort of rounded point.  I liked the template except for the front end.  Not a feather weight but light enough.  $690; a fair price I thought.

Custom shapes same price as rack boards but for some strange reason they add $20 shipping to the cost.  Boards are shaped in Hermosa Beach.  Weird.

After some lunch and a much needed rest for Chuck's mending broken ankle, we headed further north to the Encinitas Surfboards shop.  Great shop, good vibe, but nothing there that I just had to have.  Guy named Kies does most of their shaping.  I took one down from the rack just to have a better look.  This board was 9' 6", 22.75, 3.0 with "chined" rails.  If you've ever run your hand down the rails of a Walden "Magic" model you know what those are.  An interesting fin set up on this puppy.  Spaces for 4 side fins plus a center fin.  All sorts of possibilities there.  Fairly light but heavy price wise; $875.

Next: friends start offering me their boards to try out as I work my way through the endless combinations and possibilities of surfboard design.

Have a good one.

Word's Out

30+ out this morning! John, Sergio, Luke and Ian out there too. A tad smaller than yesterday; waist to shoulder high on the sets.

Ian just snagged a nice fat left. Crowd is kind of spreadout but grouped a bit further north than usual. Wind is starting to pick up a little. Better stop writing and get out there.

Have a good one.

May Grey

Overcast but clean with shoulder to head high sets. Bigger than yesterday and not quite as inconsistent.

About 12 guys out including Luke who just got a nice right shoulder.

Cleaned Up and Bigger Still

Chest to head high, clean with some stiff offshore winds. Fair shape except for the sets which are kinda walled up and 2 to 3 feet overhead. Looks like less than 15 guys out.

Very consistent; not an easy paddle out. Cold too. I think tomorrow has promise in terms of size, shape and conditions.

Have a good one

Still A Mess

But way bigger than yesterday. Wind has died down some and the swell has jumped up considerably. Nothing to ride but yesterday was just a complete jumble whereas today you can actually see a swell line.

Ok, time to get busy again searching for that new board.

Have a good one.

In Search of a New Board

Got a lot of help from folks today on how to go about the search for my new board.  Some suggested that custom is the only way to go and even mentioned some shapers I should check out.  Someone offered to sell me one of his used boards; someone else offered to let me try out his extensive quiver before I decided anything.  A really funny guy suggested that my new board would be spelled SUP.

So many useful tips and offers of assistance!

My first foray was to SouthCoast Longboards in OB.  I've always had a good experience there even though I've never bought a board from them.  Turns out they are having a sale.  $100 off any board over 8'.  Applies to custom shapes as well.  Jeff manages the shop but it was who Greg pulled out numerous boards for inspection.  I kinda liked Greg; a grey beard like me, Greg is retired and works in the shop two days a week just cause he likes to.  We ran our hands over the rails.  Felt the thickness.  Checked out rocker, concave and v.  Extolled the virtues of various rail types, tails, blanks, glass and fins.

Greg told me that a custom board would cost the same as rack boards.  Larry Ricci and Robin Prodanovich are their go to shapers.  Greg said that it would take about two to three weeks from the time Larry or Robin and I finished our conversation about what I wanted in shape, dimension, color and graphics.  Anybody have any info on Larry or Robin's rep as shapers?

These two boards were shaped by Larry.   The orange one was so nice that it was all I could do to keep my hands away from my credit card.  This is going to be more difficult than I thought.

One of you wondered what happened to my Hank Warner that caused me to put it out to pasture.  This is what happens to heavy longboards when they (me actually) don't make a really steep inside section and pogo stick off the bottom.  The cracks are getting worse each day and the board feels dead, so it must be.

I also stopped by Rocky's in OB but it was a morgue.  No one interesting to talk with although it would appear that Hank Warner is doing a lot of shaping for "Native" surfboards.  Great prices from what I could see.

So, keep sending me your ideas and thoughts on who I should talk to or call.  I will follow up and report back.

Have a good one

SCW

Sun is out. Wind is howling. Surf is junk.

Ok, now for some really important stuff. I'm in the hunt for a new board. A long board specifically. In the 9' 2" to 9' 6" range. I like square or rounded pintails. Easy paddler (need some thickness here), manuverable and good looking. Something that surfs better than I do. I'm open to off the rack or custom.

No hurry here but my Hank Warner has suffered a career ending injury and I'm riding a 20 year old Becker which gains weight with every surf session.

My plan is to keep you all up to date on the trials and tribulatIons of this quest via the CSSR blog. Won't that be fun!?

I'm counting on you for some great recommendations and leads. Get busy and let me know!

Have a good one.

Low tide, clean conditions

Two hours from the minus tide but we have some really clean conditions! Waist high sets, not much shape, super glassy. 20 guys out.

The sets are about the only ridable surf this morning. The left south of the reef looks like your best bet. Only four guys there.

Shape will continue to deteriorate as the tide bottoms out. So, if the wind stays down, an afternoon go out might work.

Have a good one.

Wave lite

Gray, drizzly morning with a moderate south wind mucking up surface conditions and a pretty good south west swell.

Knee to waist high crumblers with some chest high sets. Not much to them though. Less wind and more tide would help.

12 guys in the water. Good day to catch up on stuff you need to get done before the weekend.

Have a good one.

If it's Thursday it Must Be Tax Day

Glassy and clean. 2-3 foot low tide lines. Swell looks to be SSW with some fun looking peaks on the reef. About 15 guys out; soon to be 16 (me).

Here's to Ken's speedy recovery and a shout out to Clay just back from visiting family on Oahu.

Have a good one.

VAS

Not raining but a total blow out. Strong west wind and not much in the way of surf.

A flock of pelicans, about 20 strong, is feeding just inside the reef. They are using the wind currents to hover in place before swooping down one by one for a gulp of sea water and fish as only pelicans can do.

Padres home opener today. See you all there. Have a good one.

New Swell is Kicking In

Overcast but pretty clean. Waist to chest high with north east breeze. Sets are bigger but closing out. Looks to be more consistent than yesterday. About 20 guys out including skin man who, by the way, has a name; Mark. He also has an interesting story on why he refuses to wear a wetsuit.

We've Been Invaded!

A whole van load of people with surfboards just hit the water. Brought a photographer too.

Good surface conditions with just a hint of offshores. About waist high with some shoulder high sets. Fair shape. Sun is on it; think I'll give it a go. What's one more guy in the lineup!

Have a good one

Photos from this Morning at Del Mar

Reed, Rodney and an unidentified short border managed to snag a few waves this morning.  Notice the rip in this shot. This is just north of the ramp.

Man it is COLD this morning! Air temp of 45. I'm surprised steam is not coming off the ocean since the water temp is at least 60.

Mixed up combo of new west swell and wind swell. 3-4 feet with head high sets. Sets look like the best bet but they are backing off some in their march to shore making them difficult to slide into. Rodney and one other guy out.

Offshores are moderate and are supposed to hold thru Thursday. I'd say that at least in DM, it has some cleaning up to do before it will be a good go out.

Have a good one.

Ruffles Have Ridges!

Close order wind swell has the sea surface looking just like a ruffle potato chip. 6-7 feet with plus sized sets. Horrible shape; closed out everywhere up and down the beach.

But on the bright side it's freaking cold with just enough of an offshore breeze to make it really really frosty in the water. About 12 guys out getting hammered and battered about. Mondo large set just came through.

Have a great one.

Post Storm Conditions

Surprisingly clean conditions for storm surf. I'm not speaking to water quality here, just the sea surface. 4-5 feet, offshore with marginal shape. Nobody out.

Remember, public health officials ( and even retired ones like me) recommend not going in the water for 72 hours post rain event. This is sound advice as it keeps you from coming in contact with all the oil, grease, trash, food waste, chemicals, dog & cat shit, human excrement, fertilizer, pesticides, spit, medical waste, infectious waste and on and on and on that is carried directly to the ocean by rain water runoff in the regions' stormwater collection and discharge system.

Amazing that it's the 21st century and we still haven't figured out nor do we appear committed to devising and implementing a effective and efficient stormwater collection and management system. We suck.

Have a good one and think about that some.
